Gilbert Nero a young Grenadian painter has copped the Ministry’s award for Most Outstanding Youth in Culture, at the 2011 National Youth Awards hosted by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports, at the Youth Cultural and Recreational Centre in Grand Anse.
Nero has been painting for over a decade. His work is boldly intuitive. His paintings vary in subject but always connect to his culture. His most recent exhibition – Gilbert Nero LARGE – held this past June at the gallery of the Grenada Arts Council, showed the full range of his vibrant expression. His work has been shown in Shanghai, Miami, New York, Moscow, London and Barbados. Nero is also the recipient of an award for Best Young Artist from FIU College in Miami.
Oliver Benoit, president of the Grenada Arts Council, said that “This achievement that Nero has won is for a most important part of Grenadian culture, the visual arts. The ministry’s acknowledgement of his work and his talent, and that a visual artist has won on behalf of Grenada’s culture is significant. We at the GAC congratulate Nero and wish him well.”
