Gerardo Chijona was born in Havana on September 19, 1949. In 1974 he began working in the Information Center of ICAIC Film through which holds the film critic for several years and published in various media, including newspaper Granma and the magazine Cine Cubano . Two years later he started as assistant director for feature films such as Black River (1976), Manuel Perez and Legend (1981), Roger Paris and Jorge Fraga. Serves as the assistant director Pastor Vega Portrait of Teresa (1979) and Habanera (1984) and Rogelio Paris in the documentary film Song of Life (1983). He was promoted in 1984 to director of documentaries, earning numerous awards at major festivals worldwide. In 1992 he finished his first feature film: Adorable lies . Before the start of the pre-production, Chijona was invited by Robert Redford at the Sundance Institute, for about a month, where he participated in two workshops on screenplay and direction under the tutelage of writers such as Christopher Hampton, Matthew Robbins, Ring Lardner Jr. Walter Bernstein, and directors like Sydney Pollack, Oliver Stone and James Brooks. The film, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 1992, was also a finalist for the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His two films later, A paradise under the stars (1999) and Perfect wrong love (2004) also had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
His work has won awards at national and international festivals (Rio de Janeiro, Martinique, Festival Latino in New York, Moscow, Havana, Huelva, Bilbao). Regularly performs advisory work in the fields of screenwriting and directing at the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. In 2010 concludes Ticket to Paradise , his fourth feature, world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, USA, where he earned critical acclaim and audience.
