Nicholaas Porter was born 1952 in The Hague, Netherland from mixed parents, attended Academy of Fine arts in Utrecht. In 1975 he left the Academy after serious conflicts with some traditional teachers. Studied for some time at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris. In that same year he left Paris and moved to Aix en Provence to work as a painter and personal teacher for American students of the VanderBilt University. He had his first solo exhibition in Aix. In 1978 he left France for Suriname and currently lives and works there. In 2011 he was awarded the Rabindranath Tagore Award for photography. In 2012 he became the first prize winner at the World Portraits.
