—Occupy Wall Street Media Team
To mark the one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, arguably the most inclusive and effective protest movement of the past decade, the International Center of Photography will stage a six-week exhibition of photographs on Governor’s Island, opening August 18, 2012. The exhibition, titled “Occupy!,” will feature photographs taken of or inspired by the movement, which began in New York on September 17, 2011. The exhibition acknowledges the relevance of popular protest during this crucial presidential election year, and celebrates the significant uses of photography and social media in recording and communicating. Submissions to the exhibition are open to all interested photographers and filmmakers, professional and amateur. The multi-medium installation will include hundreds of photographic prints related to this year’s protests, as well as film screenings, digitally displayed crowd-sourced imagery, and special events. The structure of the exhibition will change over the course of its six-week run. The installation will also feature a pop-up ICP bookstore, where visitors can browse relevant books and materials, and an ongoing series of educational programs. The exhibition will be presented in the Governor’s Galleries, and will run through September 30, 2012.
