Liquid Courage Gallery presents Picky Head – An exhibition by April BeyMonday, January 6th, 2014 Categories: Exhibitions, Updates
Liquid Courage Gallery is pleased to invite you to a solo exhibition by April Bey. The date of the private viewing of the exhibition has been changed to Thursday, January 9, 2014 from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.
April’s research into black hair and identity is comprehensive and this exhibition titled Picky Head brings together a few facets of this research. April will create an installation onsite consisting of photography, text and most potently, gallons and gallons of hair-relaxer; it is at once a journalistic compilation of the social stigma black women tackle and an exploration of formal processes. April paints with chemical relaxer, technically paint, but its also a chemical so toxic that it could and would eat through the walls of the gallery. The sheer amount she will use is suffocating and is a fraught attempt to describe the pressure to conform and how this is encouraged by consumerism. April writes, “ The title of this exhibition Picky Head is a loaded insult that gave me fear as a child and the primary reason for continuously masking my blackness”.
April Bey is a Bahamian/American artist currently working in LA. April obtained her BFA from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana and will be graduating with an MFA in painting from California State University Northridge in 2014. Recent projects and awards include Mark Making curated by pop artist Derek Boshier and collaborative installation titled Dark and Lovey with graphic designer Logan Bell. Her work is being supported by The Association of Retired Faculty Memorial Award and California State University’s Graduate Studies Thesis Support Grant.
